Hass Avocado from Peru in the sights of exporters

The shortage of avocado in world markets coincides with the season with the highest harvest of Hass avocado exporters in the Peruvian highlands. Find out which months of the year they are and which sectors of the sierra are the most benefited in this context.

Hass Avocado Agroexporters

According to Sergio Rodriguez, executive director of the Instituto Tecnologico de la Producción (ITP) CITE network, during February, March and April the commercialization of avocado reaches the highest prices of the year in the world market. In the Peruvian highlands, the fruits sprout between February and May, which gives the producers of the mountains the advantage of accessing better prices.

“It is a high value crop and it is quite easy to spread among farmers in our country. Above all, because here there is an important time window in the mountains, during which it has the highest price in the world. So that's where we are working hard so that small farmers join the cultivation of Hass avocado, ”he said.

This problem is drawing the attention of large agro-export companies who have already taken action and have increased their hectares of cultivation of this fruit in regions of the Peruvian highlands such as Moquegua, Áncash, Lima (Huaura and Huacho), also in Ayacucho, Huancavelica and Cusco.

With these actions, Peruvian exports can compete with Colombian companies that have recently begun to export in this aforementioned period of scarcity.

It should be noted that at the beginning of 2020, the executive president of Sierra y Selva Exportadora, José Ezeta Carpio, indicated that Hass avocado crops in the Peruvian highlands grew at a rate of 10% per year, due to the attractiveness they are for producers.
