Peru or Mexico? Who leads the world export of asparagus

It is well known that Peru and Mexico are two agricultural powers worldwide and that in addition to being great producers, they are also great food exporters to the world. Currently, they are contesting the title for being the country with the largest world export of asparagus in this year 2021.

world export of asparagus

Last year, Peru managed to regain the title of the world's leading asparagus exporter after having lost it two consecutive years at the hands of Mexico. In terms of participation, Peru achieved 30.2% while Mexico 29.8%, so it is clear that until the end of the campaign it cannot be stated which of these two countries will achieve this achievement.

Separate chapter, during the first 4 months of export of this 2021; Mexico managed to add 118,909 tons of asparagus shipped, obtaining 241 million dollars for it, and reaching a growth of 18% in volume and 13% in value compared to the same period of 2020.

However, the fact that there is a greater supply of asparagus in Mexico caused its price to decrease by 4%, so that only 2.03 dollars was obtained for each kilogram. To the calm of Mexican producers, the United States, which concentrates 98% of shipments, increased its demand, reducing the ravages of the reduction in price.

For Peru, the first 4 months of exports of the year only added 23 thousand 771 tons worth 74 million dollars, 33% more in volume and 27% more in value compared to the first 4 months of 2020. In addition, its price per kilogram was 3.12 dollars, 4% less than last year.

It should be noted that in the case of Peruvian asparagus production and export, this remains constant throughout the year and its lowest season is between the months of February and April, those recorded so far. Unlike Mexico, Peruvian asparagus has 30 different destinations in the world, highlighting the United States and the Netherlands.

In these 4 months, despite the fact that Peru had a lower export volume, it was the country with the best performance in terms of growth in volume and value, giving it a great advantage to once again consolidate itself as the largest exporter of asparagus, however, not yet. victory must be claimed as the market trend may vary.
