The export of avocados in Peru grows by 28%

Peru is a great power in the export of avocados in the world, located only below Mexico and succeeded by South Africa, Chile and Oceania. And although Mexico remains firm at the top, Peruvian shipments are growing by leaps and bounds, increasingly narrowing the gap that separates them.

At the close of this 2021 season, between the months of January to September, Peru managed to increase shipments by 28%, 115 thousand tons more than last season, adding a total export volume of 525 thousand tons of fresh avocados and reaffirming itself as the second exporter of the fruit worldwide.

Fernando Cillóniz, president of Inform @ cción (Peruvian Consultant), indicated that in value, Peruvian avocados reached more than 1,046 million and a half US dollars, in just the first 9 months. Growing by 37% compared to the 2020 season where it reached more than 763 and a half million US dollars.

In addition, Cillóniz said that at the beginning of the year there was still uncertainty due to the pandemic and political chaos, however, the season has gone from strength to strength, reaching a historical record with more than 1 billion dollars obtained. In turn, he added that he is very pleased because this achievement was obtained thanks to the participation of small producers, mainly from the Peruvian highlands.

The months from April to August were the most productive for exports, highlighting among them June with more than 108 thousand kilos of avocados shipped and not leaving aside January, February, March and September, which also had important shipments, but less than other months.

Among the destinations for Peruvian avocados, the following stand out: the Netherlands in the first position with 171,816,836 kilos: in second place is the United States with 92,298,423 kilos; in third place, Spain with 84,686,223 kilos; in fourth place, Chile with 71,218,008 kilos and in fifth place is the United Kingdom with 35 million kilos. Other countries also include: Russia, China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Canada, Belgium, Bolivia, Italy and more.
