India: New market for Peruvian citrus and blueberries

A new commercial market would be about to open for Peruvian citrus and blueberries and the SENASA (National Agrarian Health Service) confirmed that in a short time the producers of these fruits will be able to enter the Indian market after the Committee on Sanitary Measures and India's WTO phytosanitary will publish that the import requirements that Peruvian blueberries and citrus fruits must meet are being consulted until August 31.

The Indian Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare will give the go-ahead after no consultation or technically substantiated appeal to this new trade deal has been registered. The phytosanitary requirements will be published in the "Gazette of India" which is the official newspaper of the Asian country, which, like the newspaper El Peruano, makes official the phytosanitary standards that Peruvian producers must meet in order to import blueberries and citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines, lemons and grapefruits.

Miguel Quevedo Valle, head of Senasa, said that this achievement seeks to contribute to the expansion of the international commercial portfolio to which Peruvian producers have access, in order to increase their export possibilities in order to promote the country's agricultural development.

Peru managed to export 268 thousand tons of citrus in all the months that comprise the 2020 campaign, the citrus being the most shipped mandarin with a total of 200 thousand tons, followed by tangelo with 18 thousand tons and grapefruit with only 2 thousand tons shipped, this according to what was stated by Senasa. Among the Peruvian regions most producing citrus for export are Ica, Junín and Lima, also joining Piura and Lambayeque thanks to their lemon exports.

For blueberries, the most productive regions are La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Ica, Ancash, Piura and with smaller exports Moquegua and Loreto also enter. In addition, as is already known, the Peruvian blueberry is so successful that Peru continues to hold the title of the first berrie exporter worldwide and only last season 157,972 tons were exported.
