Will Colombian avocados displace Peruvian avocados?

As we know, Peruvian avocados have earned a place in the world market for their excellent quality, texture and good flavor. But with the popularity of the fruit it is understandable that other countries begin to invest in its production, Colombia has not been the exception and Colombian avocados also began to stand out, entering the world market with good reception.

Despite its preference, the Peruvian avocado continues to negotiate to enter new markets and position itself in them, continuing on its way to surpass Mexico in the volume of international shipments.

Peruvian avocados in South Korea

A new market for Peruvian avocados is South Korea and since March 2020, at the height of the pandemic, the first shipments began to the Asian country where this year it was expected that the avocado would gain a greater presence for being novel for the Koreans.

However, in the fortnight of May, the first shipments of Colombian avocados arrived in South Korea, which would complicate the positioning plan for Peruvian avocados and increase competition to position their fruits first.

Mexico continues to be the main supplier of avocados to South Korea. Last year alone, it exported 5,561 tons of avocados worth $ 14 million, thus accounting for 34% of the share.

Before the Peruvian avocado entered the market, Mexico was the main supplier. With the first shipment from Peru, the value of their shipments fell 1%, but the volume increased by 20%. This same scenario could happen to Peru with the entry of Colombian avocados to the competition.

The United States ranked second as an avocado exporter to South Korea with 3,009 tons shipped and had an increase of 2% in value and 11% in volume, accounting for 33% of the share.

Last year, Peru, in its first shipment of 4,181 tons of avocados, accounted for 28% of the share, placing itself as the third largest supplier of avocados in South Korea.
