Peruvian Hass Avocado Is it a safe investment?

Although agriculture is a very productive sector for Peru, it is also a sector in constant uncertainty. Despite this, analysts predict a good business year for the Peruvian Hass avocado.

2020 did not achieve the expected expectations for the Hass avocado campaign, however it managed to close in positive figures. For this new year 2021, Juan Carlos Paredes, president of ProHass (Hass Avocado Producers Association), projected a growth of 27% compared to the previous season and they also expect to export more than 466 thousand tons of the fruit.

Paredes states that these projections are based on the 4000 new cultivated hectares that have already entered their productive stage and that were cultivated in 2018 since the time required for a plant to start producing fruits is 3 years.

The value of the Peruvian Hass avocado

If we talk about prices, a very significant change is not predicted, since last year the price remained stable despite the complications of the pandemic, for this year the same is expected with a view to a slight improvement in the monetary value of avocados.

To continue maintaining the value of the avocado, Paredes points out that a joint strategy must be worked out among exporters so that they do not affect each other, especially in the key weeks where export volumes reach peak figures and give a feeling of oversupply which not good for the market.

Production areas

The Peruvian supply of Hass avocado has increased thanks to the new hectares in the productive stage. Between last year and the present, 2,000 new hectares have been added, mainly in the Olmos Valley thanks to the Olmos irrigation project.

Hass avocado markets

Europe will be the main destination for the Peruvian Hass avocado according to ProHass projections, since about 260 thousand hectares will be sent there. Following Europe is the United States where 105 thousand tons will be exported, then there is Asia where 56 thousand tons will go and finally America with 44 thousand tons.
