Peruvian fruit exports – Strawberries, the big surprise

Peruvian fruit exports continue to rise, despite the continuing crisis experienced by many agro-exporters. According to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) only last February, fruit agro-exports achieved a total of 602 million dollars, which represents an increase of 17% compared to the same period in 2020.

Fruit trees continue to be the most exported products to the different markets of the world and if it continues at this rate, Midagri estimated that by the end of 2021 agro-exports will increase by 11%, achieving $ 4.3 billion.

Although we are in the middle of the Hass avocado harvest season, the projection indicates that grapes and blueberries will compete to be the most exported product by Peru. Christian Garay, director general of monitoring and evaluation of policies of Midagri, estimates that grapes will achieve exports worth more than 1,214 million dollars (+ 16.1%), while blueberries could obtain almost 1,114 million dollars (+ 11%).

Peruvian exports of fruit trees - New fruit trees

Although Peruvian grapes, blueberries or avocados are one of the most requested fruit trees in the foreign market, there are also fruit trees that are growing and in greater demand over the years.

One of them are the strawberries that according to Garay have begun to have better shipments since last year 2020 when 27% more were exported than in 2020, achieving 38 million dollars, not to mention that their growth has been maintained at a constant rate.

Until February, 155% more strawberries had been exported, obtaining 10 million dollars when in the same period of 2020 they only obtained 3.8 million dollars.

Other fruits that follow these steps are the pomegranate produced in Ica and the watermelon that is also produced in Ica and in the valleys of Lima, as well as frozen pineapple and lucuma as fruits with great export potential.
