Blueberry Exports: More Volume, Little Value

The productions and exports of Peruvian blueberries have shown rapid growth in the last decade, with growth rates of up to 45% each year compared to the previous year, to become the second most exported fruit tree by Peru and obtain the title of the most supplier country. of blueberries in the world.

Last year 2020, Peru managed to export blueberries abroad for a value of 824 million dollars, surpassing by more than 200 million dollars Chile, the second largest supplier of blueberries.

However, despite the fact that volumes increased, the high supply due to the pandemic caused the price to fall, obtaining only a 2% increase in value compared to the previous season.

From January to March 2020, blueberry exports were 20% less in volume and 53% less in value, obtaining only $ 39 million for 8, 165 tons of the berry shipped. Also due to the beginning of restrictive measures to stop COVID - 19.

From July to September, after all exporting companies implemented biosecurity protocols, shipments were 64% higher in volume and 35% higher in value, obtaining 336 million dollars for 53,176 tons of blueberries shipped, compared to the previous campaign.

The good results motivated exporters to increase the volumes of blueberries shipped without realizing that this would affect prices, which began to be reflected in October when when exporting 42,239 tons of the berry, they only obtained 191 million dollars; 37% more in volume and 9% less in value.

Throughout October, blueberry prices fell to $ 4.53 per kilogram, 34% less compared to its value in the same month of 2019. As a contingency measure, many companies suspended their shipments to prevent prices from continuing to decline.

In the last two months of 2020, blueberry exports were 3% higher in volume and 5% lower in value; obtaining 252 million dollars for 45, 909 tons and thanks to the contingency plan of the exporters that the price per kilo increased to 5.49 dollars.

Destination countries

The main importing country for Peruvian blueberries continues to be the United States with 52% of the share, followed by the Netherlands with 27% and China and Hong Kong, which together imported 11%.
