According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, MINAGRI, 20 new varieties of organic banana germplasm from Belgium have been incorporated with the ability to be resistant to being resistant to tropical Fusarium race 4.

This innovative implementation seeks to benefit more than 12 thousand small and medium producers from Tumbes, Piura and the Amazon region of Peru to improve 170 thousand hectares of organic banana cultivation by developing technologies that strengthen production.

MINAGRI commented that this plan was incorporated in order to improve agro-export quality and promote the diversification of Peruvian bananas using varieties developed by the International Musa Germplasm Transit Center of Belgium.

Why these new varieties of organic bananas?

The selected varieties are resistant to Fusarium oxysporum Race 4 Tropical (R4T), which is a fungus that causes damage to the vascular tissue of the roots and stems of plants, first producing wilt and then the death of the crops of small producers in the country, affecting seriously its economy.

The execution is still under study to be able to select only those varieties with high genetic quality that help define technological packages for agronomic management that will generate good productions and connection with different international markets.

For 20 years, the Peruvian organic banana began to stand out in international markets such as the United States, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, thanks to the good management of its 170 thousand hectares, of which only 15 thousand hectares are concentrated in the departments of Tumbes and Piura.
