Peruvian grapes ready to enter the Chilean market

Peruvian grapes are in great demand worldwide, however their entry into new international markets is still a matter for negotiation. For this reason, at the beginning of March the National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA) and the Chilean Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) met to discuss the regulations of Peruvian agricultural products and their future import to Chile.

Among the products with priority are fresh grapes, granadilla fruits and bell pepper, the process of which will begin when priority 2 ends.

Rodrigo Astete, head of the Division of Agricultural and Forest Protection of SAG commented that the priorities for the neighboring country to the south are to update the phytosanitary requirements of fresh lemon in the subtle and tahiti varieties, as well as update the requirements for the import of mangoes fresh.

However, mainly this year, they will work on the establishment of phytosanitary requirements so that fresh grapes can enter the Chilean market since Peru is an important supplier of fresh fruits from Chile, especially in the periods that Chile does not produce these fruits.

Import of Peruvian grapes

The process to obtain approval for the importation of fresh Peruvian grapes to Chile began in 2012 with the sending of technical information from SENASA so that the SAG can analyze Pest Risks, however, it was paused as priority was given to the import of other Peruvian agricultural products.

This year, the approval process for fresh grapes was reopened with the resumption of the risk assessment, an update was necessary in the Pest Risk Analysis that SENASA already made present, so Astete pointed out that the process has already it is running and is expected to be completed between the end of March and the beginning of April.
