Peru, first blueberry exporter and second of avocados

According to Claudia Cornejo, head of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Peru has managed to position itself as the first blueberry exporter during 2020, surpassing Chile for the first time.

Among other achievements, Peru is also the first exporter of quinoa worldwide and the second in shipments of avocados, canned asparagus and peeled chestnuts; as well as, the third exporter of whole ginger.

With regard to grapes, Peru is the fourth largest exporter in the world, as in the case of mangoes and fresh peas. It is the fifth supplier of evaporated milk, the sixth of melon seeds, eighth of cocoa beans and vegetable coloring and 10th of fresh garlic and canned citrus.

Regarding the monetary values ​​obtained, the total exports of 2020 exceeded those of 2019 by 7.5 billion dollars and for this 2021 exports are expected to grow by a value of 6.7% higher.

The most exported and profitable products were:

  • Fresh grapes with 1,057 million dollars.
  • Blueberries with 1.010 million dollars.
  • Fresh avocados with 759 million dollars.
  • Unroasted coffee with 645 million dollars.
  • Fresh asparagus with 385 million dollars.
  • Fresh mangoes with 291 million dollars.

The countries that imported the most Peruvian fruits were the United States, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany and Ecuador, who, with the exception of the last two, increased their purchases compared to the previous year.

La Libertad was the most exporting region in the country followed by Lima, Ica, Piura and Lambayeque. Junín was the region that surprised the most since it increased its shipments by 97.3% and also presented an increase of 18 exporting companies to have 192 in total. Ucayali and Apurímac also posted increases in their shipments of 481% and 72%, respectively.
