Fruit imports in the United States Will they go up or down?
The United States is a powerhouse in fruit imports trees around the world, contributing to the economy, mainly from Latin American countries and although there are many fruit trees that are showing a high tendency to grow their shipments, there are also others that began to decrease them.
In October, the income of bananas to the North American market decreased by 8% obtaining 149 million dollars, the lowest record in October since 2016. And to the surprise of many, so did those of avocados, which fell by 16% obtaining only 169 million dollars, figures similar to those obtained in the same period of 2018.
The country that made 99% of shipments during this time was Mexico and Chile, a country that was not far behind, could barely place shipments of 1.1 million dollars, falling significantly 10 times less than in 2019 and 20 times less than in 2018.
In Central America the fall occurred when Guatemalan exports to the United States fell 19% to 67 million dollars, Costa Rica was able to remain stable with its 32 million dollars, while Honduras was the only country that registered a growth of 24% equivalent to 21 million dollars. One country that did not have the same encouraging results was Argentina, which barely reached 6 million dollars in its shipments of blueberries to the US market.
Fruit imports that increased
Blueberries, as a whole, registered a 22% increase in imports to the United States in the month of October, reaching 156 million dollars and Peru being the main exporter of berrie with a growth of 28% earning 132 million dollars , followed by Mexico that obtained 17 million dollars and increased its shipments to 41%.
Other fruit trees that registered growth were citrus, which in October registered 23% more shipments to the United States, obtaining 131 million dollars. Among them, mandarins (+ 22%) and oranges (+ 47%) stood out. The main country that stood out in citrus exports was Chile.
